NDP Statement on Black History Month

Uncategorized

Black Canadians have long been at the forefront of Canada’s successes as a nation at home and abroad, and the establishment of Black History Month is an important step to promoting Black history as an integral part of Canadian history.

Ordinary, hardworking Canadians have played a major role in the struggle for equality and Black rights. When our children go to school, they must be taught about the struggles Black people endured in Canada as well as the many positive contributions that Black people have made to our communities and to our country.

Black Canadians are civil rights champions, writers, doctors, lawyers, bankers, politicians, musicians, athletes, workers and philanthropists. They continue to enrich the Canadian social fabric with their valuable contributions in all aspects of Canadian life.

The NDP celebrates Black History Month and invites all Canadians to take time this February to remember and celebrate the achievements of Black Canadians across this country.
